Different educational boards agree to have similar question papers

By Manash Pratim Gohain, TNN | Jan 7, 2013, 04.55 AM IST

NEW DELHI: Come 2014, class 12 students of maths and science from one particular education board will not be able to complain about having to face tougher question papers and marking systems than their counterparts studying under other boards.

The majority of educational boards conducting class 12 exams across the country have agreed in principle to have a common design of question paper to make the school-leaving exams as uniform as possible in terms of difficulty.

This is being done to give students a level playing field. Efforts began in 2010, when 20 educational boards, including the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) adopted the core curriculum in maths and science.

IIT board asks CBSE to work on common design of question paper

In 2011, all 29 boards conducting senior secondary exams had adopted a core curriculum. Taking forward the uniformity, the Apex Board of IIT has asked CBSE to work on a common design of question paper for Class XII exams for mathematics and science subjects.

Coordinating on behalf of the boards, Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE), a common platform for all educational boards in the country, has instituted a sub-committee comprising of state board members from Assam, Maharashtra, Bihar, Kerala and Rajasthan to work on the common design of question paper.

“We are going to have the first batch that will appear in Class XII exams from various boards based on the core curriculum. With a common design of question papers the difficulty level as well as marking system will be equivalent and therefore there will be complete uniformity in the system,” said chairman of COBSE as well as CBSE, Vineet Joshi. EAMCET (medical) to be held irrespective of NEET outcome

Irrespective of the Supreme Court’s final direction to the States on the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test (NEET), the State government will conduct the EAMCET next year, including the medical examination for the science students.
The medical stream test has to be conducted as admissions to veterinary and agriculture courses are based on it. So whether NEET is made compulsory or not, science students have to take the medical stream test of EAMCET if they wish to seek admissions in veterinary and agriculture courses.

AMU rejects NEET for its medical college admissions

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has rejected proposal for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for the admission in MBBS course. NEET test is to be introduced from 2013 and will cover MBBS and MD courses offered by 271 medical colleges, 138 govt-run and 133 private. Recently the Supreme Court allowed the private medical colleges to hold their own entrance test for admission to post-graduate courses for the 2013-14 academic year but restrained them from declaring the results.

The interim order was given by a bench of Chief Justice Altamas Kabir, Justice S.S. Nijjar and Justice J. Chelameswar. The private medical colleges from across the country had challenged the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to post-graduate courses for the year 2013-14.

CBSE to conduct Students Global Aptitude Index

GUWAHATI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to conduct the Students Global Aptitude Index (SGAI) in February to provide counselling through psychological measures to students opting for different streams in the senior secondary classes.

CBSE regional head KK Choudhury said, “Apart from the various innovative measures undertaken by the CBSE in relation to the curriculum and other academic activities, the board is also supporting the students by helping them choose the subjects they should take up in the senior secondary classes through psychological measures.”

The SGAI helps children to know their aptitude. This test is open to all CBSE students of standard 9 and 10, Choudhury added. The index was undertaken by the CBSE in 2011 as a pilot survey and several exams are being conducted to test the aptitude of students since then. Earlier the schools used to conduct this exam on their own, but the board has now decided to conduct the test, he said.

“This is not an examination. Students who want to know how good he or she is in a particular subject can come and sit for this test. The students have to apply online for the test, after which a centre will be allotted to them. Students can sit for the test from different parts of the northeast,” the CBSE regional head added.

This test will help students choose the subjects they should take up in senior secondary classes. In this psychological test, the questions are not on regular course questions but on psychological items. Recently an orientation programme was conducted, which was attended by resource persons from Delhi, he added.

Online evaluation for CBSE to begin from 2013

Aside

Answer papers of students appearing for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) board exams in March will be checked online.

The papers will be scanned and uploaded on to a software and teachers will be trained to check them online. The board’s move will minimise errors and help evaluation.

The method will also increase quality, speed and transparency in the evaluation process.
The board plans to introduce the digital system for classes X and XII in two phases. The first phase awill begin in March with online checking of around 3 lakh Class X answer sheets.

The CBSE will start online evaluation of class XII answer sheets in 2014. The first phase will begin with class X exam as not many opt for it so the workload will be light. The total answer sheets to be evaluated after 2013-14 exams will be about 15 lakh, including class X answer sheets.

Examiners will be trained to scan the answer sheets and upload them on screen for marking using the new software. The board has floated a tender to select at least two service providers for putting in place the infrastructure and software required. “The answer books in sealed packets will be handed over to the service provider after coded stickers are fixed,” stated the tender document by the board.

Now, students can check their marks Online – JEE

Students appearing for the highly competitive entrance examination of the Indian Institutes of Technology this year can for the first time see their answer scripts after evaluation and compare their scores with their answers.

Students appearing for the highly competitive entrance examination of the Indian Institutes of Technology this year can for the first time see their answer scripts after evaluation and compare their scores with their answers. The IITs will place on the net scanned copies of answer scripts of each of
the estimated 4.85 lakh students appearing for the IIT Joint Entrance Examination on April 11, IIT Kanpur director Sanjay Dhande told HT on Friday. IIT Kanpur is in charge of organising the IIT-JEE this year.

The move is among three dramatic admission process reforms the IITs will formally announce, possibly on Saturday, to regain any loss of faith in the IIT-JEE, ravaged by repeated controversies since 2006. “The answer scripts can be accessed by a student-specific password,” Dhande said.

Apart from making answer scripts available, the IITs will announce the correct answers to all questions in the IIT-JEE within 48 hours of the test, Dhande said. Students at present have to rely on coaching centres in the immediate aftermath of the IIT-JEE for answers to questions.

Each student will also receive marks at the time of result declaration — irrespective of whether the student has qualified, he said. Only students who qualify receive marks at present, and that too much after the exam results are declared.
